Description
Berry Bros & Rudd bottled this Ledaig matured to 4 year old from 2005, drawn from cask 900008 and bottled at 62.7%. Ledaig is the smoky side of Tobermory distillery on the Isle of Mull, one of Scotland's oldest distilleries. Burn Stewart revived the distillery in 1993, and Distell of South Africa bought it in 2013.
The spirit was distilled from malt peated to around thirty seven parts per million, building the bold, smoky Ledaig style. A sherry cask wrapped the smoke in dried fruit and a nutty depth. Younger here, the peat runs bold over a sweet, fruity core. The heavily peated spirit holds its smoke well across long maturation. The distillery was refurbished and its stills renewed between 2017 and 2019. Mull's maritime climate works into the maturing casks over the years. It is one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland still working.
Bottled at a cask strength 62.7%, it is intense. Wood smoke, BBQ char and a coastal salt, and the Oloroso brings dried fruit, fig and a nutty depth. It is bold and coastal, the peat and soot to the fore. The finish runs smoky, sweet and warm. This is a heavily peated malt from Mull's only distillery.
