Description
From Sestante comes this Ledaig, a 20 year old island malt and bottled at 40%. Ledaig is the peated malt made at Tobermory on Mull, a distillery founded as Ledaig in 1798. The single malts are bottled without chill filtration at 46.3 percent or higher.
Distilled from malt peated to around thirty seven parts per million, building the bold, smoky Ledaig style. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, vanilla under the maritime smoke. At this age it is mellow and oily, the smoke folded into a rich body. The heavily peated spirit holds its smoke well across long maturation. Both malts feed the Scottish Leader and Black Bottle blends as well as single malt. The distillery was refurbished and its stills renewed between 2017 and 2019. Mull's maritime climate works into the maturing casks over the years. It is one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland still working.
At 40% it is clean and full. Wood smoke, BBQ char and a coastal salt, and ex-Bourbon oak gives vanilla and a light sweetness. It is bold and coastal, the peat and soot to the fore. It finishes smoky, salty and warming. This is a heavily peated malt from Mull's only distillery.
