Description
Single malt Ledaig, chosen and bottled by Best Dram, aged 20 year old from 1999, drawn from cask WD102 and bottled at 60.7%. Just 130 bottles were filled. Ledaig is the smoky side of Tobermory distillery on the Isle of Mull, one of Scotland's oldest distilleries. Its history is famously broken, with long silences; the buildings once held holiday lets and stored cheese.
Drawn off stills with their S shaped lyne arms, from peated malt, for a heavily peated island spirit. Ex-Sherry wood added dried fruit to the smoky spirit. At this age it is mellow and oily, the smoke folded into a rich body. Long maturation turns fierce young smoke into a rounded, coastal peat. Both malts feed the Scottish Leader and Black Bottle blends as well as single malt. The distillery was refurbished and its stills renewed between 2017 and 2019. Mull's maritime climate works into the maturing casks over the years.
Bottled at a cask strength 60.7%, it is intense. A sooty smoke with tar and brine, and raisin and a nutty sherry depth build. The texture is oily, the smoke threaded with sea salt. The finish is deep, tarry and sweet. This is Ledaig's smoky, maritime single malt.
