Le Ragnaie’s Troncone is an organic young Sangiovese from Montalcino, aged in cement and barrel. Fresh and unforced, it shows sour cherry, red berries, dried herbs and a peppery, earthy lift.
Description
Troncone is Le Ragnaie's youthful Toscana Rosso, made by Riccardo Campinoti from organically and biodynamically farmed Sangiovese grown in the high hills of Montalcino. It is deliberately the estate's freshest red, built to show the bright, savoury side of Sangiovese rather than its structure. The vineyards sit at altitude, where cool air and strong diurnal swings between warm days and cold nights hold the grapes' acidity and red fruit, while the galestro and clay soils drain freely and keep the fruit lively. The wine spends around eighteen months in a combination of cement tanks and barrels: the cement is neutral and preserves the pure fruit and freshness, while the barrel portion softens the tannins gently through limited oxygen exchange without adding obvious oak. Together they give a wine that is light on its feet but textured. Expect a bright ruby colour, a nose of sour cherry, red berries and dried herbs with a floral lift, and a palate that is fresh and savoury, with earth, black pepper and a clean, lightly grippy finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, and a little cooler in summer. It suits tomato pasta, grilled pork and charcuterie.
