Le Ragnaie makes this organic Rosso di Montalcino from Sangiovese, with vineyards among the highest in the zone in southwest Tuscany. Thirteen months in oak give a fresh, savoury red of red cherry, herbs and an earthy finish.
Description
Le Ragnaie is the project of Riccardo Campinoti and his wife Jennifer in Montalcino, in the province of Siena in southwest Tuscany, with 28 hectares of which a third sit in the high Lume Spento pass, among the highest vineyards in the zone. This Rosso di Montalcino is made from Sangiovese and farmed organically. Altitude is central here, as the cooler nights of these elevated sites slow ripening and preserve the acidity and fine tannin that give the wine freshness and a savoury, structured frame rather than heavy fruit. After fermentation it spends thirteen months in oak, where gradual oxygen exchange settles the tannin and adds a measured savoury depth while keeping the focus on the Sangiovese. The colour is a bright garnet. The nose shows red cherry and red berries with dried herbs and tobacco over an earthy base. The palate is medium bodied at 13.5 percent, fresh and savoury, with firm acidity, fine tannin and a long finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees in a large glass. It is a versatile food wine that suits Tuscan and Mediterranean cooking.
