Description
Le Ragnaie, an estate of around twenty-eight hectares in Montalcino, makes Passo del Lume Spento as an IGP Toscana Rosso from organically farmed Sangiovese, named after the scenic climb that winds through the high hills of Siena. Winemaker Riccardo Campinoti works some of the highest sites in the zone, where altitude is the defining factor: cool air and strong diurnal swings between warm days and cold nights slow the ripening of Sangiovese, holding its bright acidity and red fruit while the galestro and clay soils drain freely and keep yields low and concentrated. Sangiovese grown this way gives sour cherry, red berry fruit and a savoury, earthy character rather than ripe density. Barrel ageing softens the firm tannins through gentle oxygen exchange and adds a light, spicy frame without masking the fruit. Expect a bright ruby colour, a nose of cherry, red berries and dried herbs, and a palate that is fresh and savoury, with earth, leather and a tannic grip running into a clean finish. Serve at 16 degrees. It suits grilled beef, tomato-based pasta and mushroom dishes.
