Anne-Marie Lavaysse and her son Pierre make this natural rosé at Le Petit Domaine de Gimios in the Languedoc, blending Muscat with old red varieties. Farmed biodynamically with no additions, it is fruit driven and aromatic at 14 percent.
Description
Le Petit Domaine de Gimios is a small Languedoc estate founded in 1993 by Anne-Marie Lavaysse, who still works it today with her son Pierre. She began by recovering old, abandoned plots of Muscat and has since added parcels of various red varieties, all farmed biodynamically. This rosé is a field blend of Muscat à Petits Grains and several old red grapes, made as a natural wine with minimal intervention, spontaneous fermentation from native yeast and little or no added sulphur. That hands-off approach lets the fruit and the warm Languedoc climate speak directly, and the Muscat gives the wine a recognisable grapey, floral aromatic lift that sets it apart from a conventional rosé. At 14 percent it is ripe and full for the style, an explosion of fruit rather than a delicate aperitif wine. Expect aromas of red berries, cherry, rose and orange peel, with a dried herb edge from the garrigue. The palate is fruity and textured, dry but generous, with the aromatic Muscat carrying through to the finish. Serve lightly chilled at around 10 to 12 degrees with food. As a living natural wine it benefits from being opened a little ahead.
