Le Grappin, the natural-leaning estate of Andrew and Emma Nielsen, makes this Beaune 1er Cru Boucherottes from Pinot Noir. Twelve months in oak give a fragrant Burgundy of ripe cherry, strawberry, dried leaves and a fine, earthy finish.
Description
Le Grappin is the Burgundy estate of Andrew and Emma Nielsen, who founded it in 2011 with a low intervention, natural approach. This wine comes from the Boucherottes premier cru vineyard in Beaune, on the Cote d'Or, planted to Pinot Noir. The Cote d'Or runs along a limestone and marl escarpment, and Boucherottes sits on the lower slope, where deeper, clay rich soils over limestone give a rounder, fruit forward style of Beaune. The cool continental climate and the well drained slope let Pinot Noir ripen slowly, keeping the bright acidity and delicate aromatics the grape is known for. The wine ages 12 months in oak barrels, mostly older wood, so the oxygen exchange softens the tannin while leaving the fruit and floral character clear. The colour is pale to medium ruby. The nose is fragrant, with ripe red cherry, strawberry, rose, dried leaves and a touch of forest floor. The palate is medium bodied and silky, with fine tannin, fresh acidity and an earthy, savoury finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees in a wide glass. It is classic with roast duck, chicken and mushrooms.
