Laus makes this Somontano blend of Chardonnay and Garnacha Blanca in Barbastro, at the foot of the Pyrenees. Grown at 350 to 400 metres on chalky, stony soils with gypsum, it shows lemon zest, pineapple and ripe banana over a fresh frame.
Description
Bodegas Laus sits in the south of the D.O. Somontano, in Barbastro in the province of Huesca, at the foothills of the Pyrenees. This is a blend of Chardonnay and Garnacha Blanca. The vineyards lie between 350 and 400 metres on chalky and stony soils that carry gypsum, in a dry climate of marked contrasts with little rainfall. The altitude and the cool mountain air drive a wide day to night temperature swing that lengthens ripening and preserves acidity, while the poor, well drained soils keep yields low. The two grapes are picked and vinified to keep the wine fresh, fermented in stainless steel at low temperature to protect the aromatics. Chardonnay lends structure and orchard fruit, while Garnacha Blanca adds body and a soft floral tone. It is pale yellow with green tints. The nose is fresh and delicate, with lemon zest, pineapple and ripe banana. The palate is medium bodied and balanced, with pear, melon and a clean citrus finish. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees in a white wine glass. It suits white fish, shellfish and lighter poultry.
