Description
Las Vedras works the vineyards planted by António Carvalho in Torres Vedras, in the Lisbon region north of the capital, a maritime zone of clay and limestone soils cooled by Atlantic air. The Limo Tinto is a field of old vines blending Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Castelão and Alicante Bouschet, the last a teinturier grape with red flesh that deepens both colour and structure. The Atlantic influence and the diurnal swing between warm days and cool nights hold the acidity and keep the tannins fine. Farming is natural and respectful, with native yeast fermentation, and the wine spends six months in oak barrels, enough to round the tannin and add a light cedar and spice frame without masking the fruit. The colour is deep ruby. The nose is black plum, dark cherry and red berries with pepper, tobacco and an earthy undertone. The palate is structured and savoury, with firm but ripe tannin and a long, mineral finish that reflects the limestone. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, ideally decanted, alongside roast or grilled red meat.
