Daniel Landi makes Las Uvas de la Ira Vino del Pueblo in D.O. Méntrida, a single-varietal Garnacha from recovered old vines. Aged in foudres, it shows a pale colour, fresh red fruit, pomegranate and a floral, herbal lift.
Description
Daniel Gómez Jiménez-Landi works with old, recovered Garnacha in D.O. Méntrida, on the southern flank of the Gredos mountains, the same high-altitude terrain that drives the Comando G project he is part of. Vino del Pueblo is his village-level Garnacha, made from old vines farmed with minimal intervention and respectful, sustainable agriculture. The granite and decomposed-sand soils of the area, combined with altitude, give a lighter, fresher style of Garnacha than the grape's warm-climate reputation suggests, with paler colour and bright acidity. The wine ages in large foudres rather than small barrels, so the oak influence stays in the background and the focus remains on fruit and place, the large format allowing gentle oxidation without adding obvious wood spice. The colour is pale and translucent. The nose is delicate, with fresh red fruit, pomegranate, a floral note of rose and a savoury, herbal edge. The palate is light and fresh, with fine tannins, lively acidity and a peppery, earthy finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, lightly chilled. It suits roast poultry, game birds and mushroom dishes.
