Ramón Bilbao makes Lalomba Rosé in Haro from Garnacha Tinta with a little Viura. Hand harvested into small boxes and aged in concrete and old vats, it is pale and textured, with red berry, stone fruit and a saline freshness.
Description
Bodegas Ramón Bilbao was founded in 1924 and is based in Haro, the Rioja town with the greatest concentration of century-old wineries in the world. Lalomba Rosé is led by Garnacha Tinta with a small share of Viura, hand harvested into 12 kilogram boxes to keep the fruit intact before pressing. The wine is made in a pale Provence-influenced style, with the juice fermented and then aged for around six months in concrete and old vats. Concrete is neutral and porous, allowing a slow, gentle oxygen exchange that builds texture and weight without adding oak flavour, while the lees contact over those months rounds the palate and adds a faint creaminess. Garnacha brings ripe red berry and stone fruit, and the Viura contributes citrus lift and freshness. The result is a pale salmon wine with aromas of strawberry, white peach and citrus peel over a subtle floral note. The palate is dry and savoury, with red fruit, a stony minerality and a saline, persistent finish carried by good acidity. Serve chilled at around 8 to 10 degrees, ideally in a white wine glass, as an aperitif or alongside seafood and lighter dishes.
