Description
Lagavulin 25 Year Old (2016 Special Release) was issued as part of Diageo’s Special Releases 2016 programme, marking the distillery’s 200th anniversary. Distilled in 1990 and bottled after twenty-five years of maturation, it is a true vintage release produced in limited quantities and bottled at natural cask strength (51.7 percent ABV).
The whisky is widely described as having been matured in sherry casks, a departure from the refill-led maturation seen in some other long-aged Lagavulin releases. Extended ageing in sherry wood has softened the distillery’s trademark peat, allowing layers of dried fruit, leather, old oak, tobacco and gentle spice to emerge, with smoke acting as an integrated structural element rather than the dominant force.
