Lady of the Sunshine farms this single-vineyard Pinot Noir biodynamically in California’s cool Edna Valley. Ten months in neutral oak keep it fresh and savoury, showing ripe cherry, raspberry and a floral, earthy lift.
Description
Lady of the Sunshine makes this Pinot Noir from the Chene Vineyard in AVA Edna Valley on California's Central Coast, farmed biodynamically. Edna Valley is one of the state's coolest growing areas, open to Pacific fog and wind that funnel through a gap in the coastal hills, slowing ripening and holding the acidity that Pinot Noir needs to stay fresh and detailed. The valley's calcareous and sandy soils lend a savoury, mineral cut. Biodynamic farming keeps the vineyard in balance and the fruit expressive. The wine is aged 10 months in neutral oak, barrels that have lost their wood flavour and serve only to allow a gentle oxygen exchange that softens the tannins and rounds the texture while leaving the fruit and terroir untouched by new-oak spice. It shows a bright, translucent ruby. The nose leads with ripe cherry and raspberry over rose, dried herbs and a peppery, earthy lift. The palate is medium-bodied and silky at a moderate 13.5 percent, the tannins fine and the acidity bright, the red fruit and savoury depth carrying a long finish. This is the classic, food-friendly register of cool-climate Pinot Noir. Serve at 15 to 17 degrees, lightly chilled, with roast duck, chicken or mushroom dishes.
