La Vieille Ferme Blanc is a fresh southern French white from the Luberon in the Rhone. It blends Bourboulenc, Grenache Blanc, Ugni Blanc and Vermentino, rested on its lees, giving lemon, green apple and pear with a crisp, dry finish.
Description
La Vieille Ferme is the widely available range from the Perrin family of the southern Rhone, and this white comes from the Luberon, an appellation of hills and cooler valleys east of Avignon. It blends four southern grapes: Bourboulenc and Grenache Blanc for body and orchard fruit, Ugni Blanc for its bright acidity, and Vermentino for citrus lift and a touch of herbal aroma. The Luberon sits at altitude, and its cooler nights help the grapes hold freshness through the warm Mediterranean summer, which is what keeps a wine at this price crisp rather than heavy. The wine is rested on its lees to add a little texture and roundness while keeping the style clean and direct. It is pale straw in the glass, with a nose of lemon, green apple and pear lifted by white flowers and a light melon note. The palate is dry, fresh and easy, the fruit carried on brisk acidity to a clean finish. This is a straightforward, well-made white for everyday drinking. Serve well chilled, around 9 to 10 degrees. It works as an aperitif and with salads, grilled white fish and lighter chicken dishes.
