Description
La Vicalanda Tempranillo Blanco comes from Bodegas Bilbaínas in Rioja and sits in the estate's top La Vicalanda range, a small production white made in a more intense, structured style. Tempranillo Blanco is a natural white mutation of Tempranillo, only recently authorised in the region, and it gives good body along with citrus and stone fruit. Rioja's continental climate, with hot days and cool nights, helps the grape keep freshness at ripeness. The wine is aged for around six months in French oak foudres, replacing the American oak traditionally used in the appellation; the large format means a slow, gentle oxygen exchange that adds structure and a faint spice and nutty note without the strong vanilla and coconut of small new barrels, while lees contact builds texture. The colour is bright straw. The nose leads with white flowers and apricot, with white peach and lemon, and a distinctive balsamic bay leaf and light spice character. The palate is dry, fresh and structured, the fruit and a gentle almond, waxy depth carried by good acidity to a long finish. Serve at around 11C in a white glass.

Additional information
Pairs with baked fish such as hake and salmon, and with roast chicken or pork, where the structure and texture match the dish. The savoury herbal edge also works with hard nutty cheeses like Manchego.
