Toni Carbó makes this Penedès red from old Sumoll vines under his La Salada label, a low intervention natural wine. Eight months in clay amphorae give a juicy, bright palate of fresh red fruit, violet and earthy minerality at a light 11 percent.
Description
La Filla de Maçaners is Toni Carbó's personal project at his family home in the Penedès, made under the La Salada name alongside his long partnership with Ramon Jané at Mas Candí. It is built around Sumoll, an old Catalan variety prized for its high acidity and translucent colour, grown here on the calcareous soils of the inland Penedès. The wine is fermented and aged for eight months in clay amphorae rather than oak, a porous vessel that allows gentle oxygen exchange without adding wood flavour, preserving the grape's natural freshness and floral lift. Minimal intervention in the cellar and an early-drinking style keep the alcohol low at 11 percent. The colour is pale ruby. The nose shows fresh red fruit, raspberry and red currant, with floral and earthy touches drawn from the variety and the clay ageing. The palate is rustic, deep and fresh, with light grippy tannin and bright acidity that carry a savoury finish. Serve lightly chilled at around 14 degrees in a Burgundy glass. It suits charcuterie, roast chicken and grilled mushrooms.
