Toni Carbó, a fourth generation grower, makes this Penedès orange wine from Macabeo, Parellada and Malvasía de Sitges. Macerated on the skins then raised six months in steel, it is fresh and direct, with ripe apple, pear and a herbal lift.
Description
Celler La Salada is run by Toni Carbó in El Pla del Penedès in Catalonia, the son, grandson and great grandson of local winegrowers, now working with native varieties under organic farming and minimal intervention. This orange wine is built on Macabeo and Parellada with Malvasía de Sitges, grown on the limestone clay soils of the Penedès under a warm Mediterranean climate moderated by altitude and sea air. The white grapes are macerated on their skins, which draws phenolics, light tannin and amber colour out of the skins to give texture and a savoury edge, then the wine is raised for six months in stainless steel tanks. Steel ageing keeps the wine away from oxygen and oak, preserving its bright fruit and clean, mineral character rather than pushing it toward an oxidative style. Natural, organic and vegan. The colour is a vivacious pale amber. The nose shows ripe apple, pear and citrus peel with white flowers and a herbal note, and the palate is dry, fresh and lightly grippy with a clean, savoury finish. Serve chilled at 10 to 12 degrees. Good with white fish, seafood and salads.
