A young natural white from Celler La Salada in Penedès, blending Chardonnay with the local Macabeo and Montònec. Toni Carbó works without chemicals, and the wine shows green apple, pear and citrus with a light floral edge and low intervention throughout.
Description
Celler La Salada is Toni Carbó's family project in Penedès, Catalonia, carried on from four generations of growers and worked without synthetic chemicals in the vineyard. El Pagès Content blanc is a young white blending Chardonnay with the traditional Catalan varieties Macabeo and Montònec, the latter a local name for Parellada. The Penedès sits inland from the Mediterranean, its limestone and clay soils and warm days tempered by cooling sea breezes and night-time falls in temperature that hold acidity in the fruit. Made as a natural wine, it is fermented with indigenous yeasts and given minimal handling in the cellar, with little to no added sulphur, which keeps the fruit direct and the texture lively. The colour is a bright straw. The nose leads with green apple, pear and lemon, lifted by white flowers and a faint bready note from time on the fine lees. The palate is fresh and unoaked, with crisp acidity and a clean, citrus-edged finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees in a standard white glass. It works as an aperitif and alongside raw and grilled shellfish, light salads or fresh goats cheese.
