Description
La Planta is made by Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro in D.O. Ribera del Duero, from Tinto Fino, the local name for Tempranillo, grown on the winery's own vines of more than 20 years of age. The vineyards sit at around 900 metres on chalky-clay soils. Altitude is central to Ribera del Duero: at this elevation summer days are hot but nights drop sharply, and the wide diurnal range slows the final stage of ripening, locking in colour, acidity and aromatic freshness even as the fruit reaches full maturity. The chalky-clay soils drain well and add a firm mineral spine. This is the estate's youngest red, aged for just six months in French and American oak, enough to round the tannins and add a frame of vanilla and spice without burying the fruit. Short oak handling like this keeps the wine bright and immediate rather than heavily structured. It shows a vivid colour, an intense nose of tart strawberry and cherry with subtle spice and a touch of earthiness, and a fresh, juicy palate with supple tannin. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, slightly cooler than a heavier Ribera. It suits grilled meats, lamb chops and tomato-based dishes.
