La Petite Église comes from Pomerol, the second wine of the late Denis Durantou, built from Merlot and Cabernet Franc on sandy gravel. Barrel aged, it shows ripe plum, redcurrant and liquorice over an earthy, savoury frame, with Pomerol’s plush texture.
Description
La Petite Église is a Pomerol red conceived by Denis Durantou, the grower behind several of the appellation's most respected estates, as a way of reading the same terroir from a different angle. It is built mainly from Merlot with Cabernet Franc, grown on the sandy gravel soils that define this corner of the right bank. The gravel drains well and warms easily, ripening Merlot fully and giving the round, fleshy texture Pomerol is known for, while patches of clay in the subsoil add structure and hold water through dry summers. The wine is aged in oak barrels, where gentle oxygen exchange polishes the tannins and adds cedar and cocoa tones that frame rather than dominate the fruit. It shows a deep ruby colour and a refined nose of ripe blackcurrant, plum and redcurrant, with a subtle background of spice, liquorice and tobacco. The palate is supple and rounded, with a creamy mid-weight and fine, ripe tannins, carried by fresh acidity to a long, savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees and decant an hour ahead while young. It is a classic match for roast lamb, beef and game.
