A high-proof Caroni from the 2000 vintage, all tar, rubber and clean petroleum over roasted oak, dark chocolate and a menthol finish, aged seventeen years in ex-bourbon casks and bottled unsweetened at 55% by La Maison and Velier.
Description
This is heavy Caroni, the legendary Trinidad distillery that closed in 2003 before Velier rescued thousands of forgotten casks from the abandoned bond. La Maison and Velier bottle this 2000 vintage at seventeen years and 55%, drier and a touch more restrained than the fiercest releases but holding the industrial DNA fully intact. It is unsweetened and tropically aged at strength.
Drawn from molasses and column distilled in the heavy marque style, then matured in ex-bourbon oak, it opens on tar, roasted wood and spice. The palate is dense and oily, rubber and tar wrapped around dark chocolate and a flash of red fruit, closing long on menthol, more rubber and barrel char. This is the archetypal savoury, smoky, petrol-and-tropical-fruit Caroni, built for slow contemplation rather than easy drinking, and rewarding for those already at home with the style.
