A biodynamic Marsannay from the Longeroies lieu-dit at the northern tip of the Côte de Nuits, made by Oronce de Beler with horse-tilled vines. This single-vineyard Pinot Noir shows red cherry, wild berries and rose over an earthy, peppery frame.
Description
La Maison Romane Marsannay Longeroies is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the northern end of the Côte de Nuits, made by Oronce de Beler, who founded the domaine in 2005 and works from a sixteenth-century house. He tills with Percheron horses, avoids chemicals, and farms biodynamically, timing his cellar work to the lunar calendar. The Longeroies climat sits on a limestone slope with stony brown soils over Jurassic bedrock, a free-draining, alkaline base that suits Pinot Noir and gives Marsannay its firm red-fruited profile and savoury minerality. The cool northern aspect and good diurnal range hold acidity and keep the fruit fresh through ripening. Vinification follows the low-intervention path of native yeasts, gentle extraction and ageing in French oak that frames rather than marks the fruit. The colour is a bright translucent ruby. The nose shows red cherry, wild strawberry, rose petal and a turn of black pepper, with an earthy undertone. The palate is light to medium, fresh and sapid, the tannins fine and the finish mineral and lifted. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. Good with roast duck, guinea fowl or a mushroom tart.
