Description
La Gauloise Bicentenaire Verte is a traditional green herbal liqueur from France, produced by the Distillerie du Centre in Limoges to a historic recipe from 1783 attributed to the pharmacist Edouard Requier, who worked from an old plant book. It is made from a secret blend of over thirty herbs, roots and spices and distilled by hand in an elaborate process. Bottled at a strong 48%, the green version is the more powerful, aromatic and bitter of the house expressions.
The nose is an intense herbal blend with menthol, aniseed, pine resin and a subtle sweetness, the palate complex and full bodied with strong herbal notes, fine bitterness, spice and balsamic nuances, finishing long, warming and tangy with a lingering herbal character. Behind the bar it brings concentrated herbal bitterness, menthol and a high strength backbone, which makes it a bold accent in a herbal cocktail or in patisserie. It is traditionally served neat or over ice as a digestif, and can be taken with a dash of ice cold water in the manner of absinthe or a green monastic liqueur.
