Description
La Furtiva Vinya d'en Miquel is a single-plot red from Garnacha Peluda, the hairy-leafed Grenache mutation, grown by Oscar Navas in the D.O. Terra Alta in southern Catalonia. The plot sits at altitude near Batea on calcareous, very shallow soil, a combination that slows ripening: the poor, stony ground limits vigour and the cooler nights of the high site preserve acidity and the grape's herbal, peppery side, even as the Mediterranean warmth builds ripe fruit and a full 14 per cent alcohol. The wine is made naturally, with minimal intervention. Ageing took place over 12 months in chestnut barrels rather than oak; chestnut is more porous and was traditional across the Mediterranean, allowing brisk oxygen exchange to soften the wine and lend a savoury, slightly rustic character without strong oak flavour. The colour is deep red. The nose shows ripe red berries and plum with dried garrigue herbs, pepper and an earthy, stony note. The palate is rich and warming but lifted, with ripe fruit, fine tannins and fresh acidity, closing on liquorice and thyme. Serve at 16 to 18C. It suits roast lamb, grilled meats and vegetable dishes.
