La Furtiva is Oscar Navas’s Mediterranean white blend of Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo from Villalba dels Arcs in Terra Alta. Ten months in French oak and six in bottle give it ripe pear, white peach, a waxy texture and a gentle savoury edge.
Description
La Furtiva is the personal project of Oscar Navas, made in Villalba dels Arcs in the D.O. Terra Alta, the inland Catalan zone where his grandmother lived. This is a blend of Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo, two varieties long grown across the region. Terra Alta sits at altitude behind the coastal ranges, and the wide gap between warm days and cool nights keeps acidity firm while the fruit ripens fully, which matters for the naturally low acid Garnacha Blanca. The wine is made in a hands off, natural style and spends ten months in French oak barrels followed by six months in bottle. Time on the barrel adds slow oxygen exchange and fine lees contact that broadens the texture and softens the palate without heavy wood character. The colour is bright gold. The nose shows ripe pear and white peach with beeswax, almond and a light toasted note. The palate is rounded and savoury, carried by the barrel derived weight and a saline mineral finish typical of the region's stony soils. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a broad white glass. It suits roast chicken, grilled white fish and hard sheep cheeses.
