Óscar Navas makes this Terra Alta red from Tempranillo and the rare local Morenillo, with just one month in cement. Natural in approach, it is light, fresh and floral, with red berry fruit and a herbal, savoury edge.
Description
La Furtiva is the personal project of young winemaker Óscar Navas in D.O. Terra Alta, in Catalonia, built from Tempranillo and the scarce indigenous Morenillo. Terra Alta is a high inland appellation with arid soils and a Mediterranean climate of scorching summers, though altitude and cool nights protect freshness and aromatic detail. Morenillo is a pale, lightly tannic local grape that brings perfume and red fruit lift, which sets the gentle, transparent style here. The wine is made with a natural approach and rests just one month in cement tanks, an inert vessel that adds no oak and keeps the fruit bright and unmasked, with the intention of an extended period of bottle ageing to follow. The result is a light bodied red with a floral, savoury nose of red berries, cherry and dried herbs over a faintly earthy base. The palate is fresh and supple, with tangy red fruit, fine soft tannins and lively acidity through a clean finish. Serve lightly chilled at 13 to 15 degrees. It suits roast chicken, charcuterie and lighter pork dishes, and can stand in for a white.
