Description
Celler de Capçanes was founded as a cooperative in 1933 by five families to preserve the winemaking heritage around Capçanes, and has built a particular reputation for kosher wines. This is a single variety bottling of Samsó, the Catalan name for Cariñena, an old vine grape that thrives in the D.O. Montsant. The vineyards sit on the poor schist and clay soils ringing the Priorat, under a Mediterranean climate with a continental influence, where hot days and cold nights give a wide diurnal range that ripens the fruit fully while keeping the acidity and aromatic detail. Old Cariñena vines yield small, concentrated crops with naturally firm structure. The wine is aged for fourteen months in French oak, which rounds the grape's tannin and adds a spice frame while the ripe fruit holds the lead. Expect a deep ruby colour, a nose of ripe plum, red berries and dried herbs with a peppery, mineral note, and a full bodied palate that is warming and generous with firm tannin and a savoury, liquorice edged finish. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees and decant ahead. It is a red for hearty roast and grilled meat.
