A twenty year Martinique AOC agricole from La Favorite’s La Flibuste, distilled from fresh cane juice off the Creole column and aged in cognac casks, deep and honeyed with dried fruit, leather, grass and licorice, unsweetened at 40%.
Description
La Favorite is one of the last family run distilleries in Martinique, and its La Flibuste line is among the most revered aged agricole on the island. This 1999 is a twenty year Martinique rum made from fresh pressed sugar cane juice on a Creole column still under the AOC, bottled unsweetened at a gentle 40% that belies its depth.
Two decades in cognac casks have drawn out a rich, almost cognac profile, with dried fruit, honeyed wood, leather and roasted notes layered over the grassy cane character, finishing on plum, caramel, wood and licorice. The long tropical ageing concentrates everything into a smooth, supple sipper where the modest strength feels exactly right, the sweetness all from fruit and oak rather than any dosage. This is aged agricole at its most refined, an after-dinner pour for drinkers who appreciate gentle, long matured rum that trades power for elegance and length.
