A young Martinique vieux from La Favorite finished in cognac and toasted casks, fresh cane juice gone fruity with apricot, raspberry and fruit schnapps over an oily, oak-edged body, dry and unsweetened at 46%.
Description
La Favorite is one of the last independent family distilleries in Martinique, and this Exploration No. 8 2021 is a three year old vieux from its experimental range, distilled from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice on a creole column and matured in cognac casks alongside toasted oak from the Navarre cooperage.
That cask choice pushes the rum into vivid orchard-fruit territory. The nose leads with fruit schnapps, apricot and fruity, agricultural cane, the palate is woody and oily with more fruit schnapps and raspberry, and the finish carries oak, apricot and an oily texture. At 46% it stays balanced and dry, the cane-juice backbone keeping it fresh under the fruit and wood. A characterful, cask-driven young agricole that shows La Favorite's more adventurous side.
