La Conreria d’Scala Dei makes this Priorat white from Garnacha Blanca on slate soils. Four months on the lees in stainless steel give a pale, textured wine with white peach, pear and a fine mineral edge.
Description
Les Brugueres Blanc comes from La Conreria d'Scala Dei in D.O.Q. Priorat, made by owner Jordi Vidal from Garnacha Blanca. The grape grows on the region's slate soils, known as llicorella, a broken schist and quartzite that reflects heat and drives the roots deep for water, giving low yields and concentrated fruit. Garnacha Blanca is a fuller white variety, and here it is fermented and held for four months on its lees in stainless steel, with no oak. Ageing on the spent yeast lees releases mannoproteins that build a rounder, creamier texture and add a fresh-dough character while the steel keeps the fruit clear and the wine bright. The colour is pale yellow with green reflections. The nose shows white peach, pear and white flowers with a light lees-driven dough note. The palate is dry and textured, with citrus peel, melon and a touch of almond over a mineral, saline finish drawn from the slate. This is a young wine that balances freshness with body. Serve at 10 to 12C. It suits white fish, shellfish and roast chicken.
