Description
La Clarte de Haut-Brion is the second white wine of Chateau Haut-Brion, drawn from the vineyards of Haut-Brion and its neighbour La Mission Haut-Brion in Pessac-Leognan, the Graves district on the edge of the city of Bordeaux. The blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc grows on the deep gravel mounds that give the appellation its name, stony soils that drain quickly and radiate stored heat, ripening the fruit while the maritime climate preserves acidity. The wine is fermented and aged in oak barrels, where contact with the fine lees and slow oxygen exchange through the wood build a creamy texture and fold the oak into the fruit. Semillon supplies the body and the waxy weight, Sauvignon Blanc the citrus lift and aromatic freshness. The colour is bright yellow. The nose shows ripe pear and apple with white peach, over lemon, white flowers and a light vanilla spice. The palate is fresh and finely balanced, with citrus acidity, an almond and mineral mid-palate, and a long, clean finish. Serve at 11 to 13 degrees, and decant a young bottle.

A refined match for roast chicken, sole or lobster, where the barrel texture and fresh acidity both count. It also holds up to hard nutty cheeses such as Comte.
