La Calandria make this single-variety rosé from old Garnacha vines in D.O. Navarra, farmed with environmentally friendly methods. At 13.5 percent it has more weight and fruit depth than a pale Provence pink, with ripe red berries and a peppery edge.
Description
La Calandria is the project of childhood friends Luis Remacha and Javier Continente, who settled in D.O. Navarra where they found old Garnacha vineyards. Sonrojo is a single-variety Garnacha Tinta drawn from these recovered old vines, worked through environmentally friendly agriculture. Navarra has a continental climate with Mediterranean and Atlantic influences, and the old vines give low yields of concentrated fruit, which translates into the wine's deeper fruit profile and 13.5 percent alcohol. Garnacha brings ripe red fruit and a warm, spiced character. A measured skin contact draws more colour and texture than a pale style, and cool fermentation keeps the aromatics fresh while retaining the variety's natural generosity rather than building oak. The colour is a vivid pink. The nose shows ripe red berries and cherry with white peach and a peppery, herbal lift. The palate is dry with real fruit weight, the strawberry and cherry carried on firm acidity to a savoury, faintly spiced finish. Serve chilled at 9 to 11 degrees. The extra body lets it handle grilled chicken, pork and richer fish.
