Angiolino Maule’s La Biancara makes this Merlot in the Veneto hills of Gambellara, farmed naturally and organically. Eighteen months in oak give a savoury, food-friendly red of cherry, blackberry and earthy freshness at a moderate 13.5 percent.
Description
La Biancara is the Veneto estate of Angiolino Maule, a pioneer of Italian natural wine who founded the project in the hills of Gambellara and works organically with minimal intervention. This Merlot is grown on the volcanic basalt soils of the area, which lend a mineral, savoury cut that pulls Merlot away from its plusher international register toward something earthier and more structured. The hillside vineyards and the cool air off the surrounding hills hold acidity and keep the fruit fresh, reflected in a moderate 13.5 percent. Natural winemaking here means native yeast fermentation and little or no added sulphur, an approach that preserves the grape's clarity and gives the wine an open, lively texture. It ages 18 months in oak, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds a light spice and savoury frame rather than obvious wood. It shows a bright ruby. The nose leads with cherry and blackberry over dried herbs, black pepper and a stony, earthy note. The palate is medium-bodied and savoury, the tannins fine and the acidity bright, carrying a fresh, food-friendly finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with roast beef, lamb or mushroom dishes.
