An eight-year Panamanian ron from Varela Hermanos finished in cognac casks, caramelised and fruity with apple, almond, a cognac lift and a smoky edge over a spiced, tropical-fruit finish, a soft 40% sipper that also lends itself to dessert.
Description
Kuna Aged Ron is a Panamanian ron from Varela Hermanos, the country's dominant producer and a major source of aged rum for independent bottlers. It is a molasses spirit distilled on a column still, carried eight years and finished in cognac casks before bottling at a soft 40%, sitting in the mellow Panama tradition.
The cognac finish shapes the glass: the nose shows a caramelised, cognac-tinged character with almond and a faint solvent edge, while the palate turns to caramel, apple and tropical fruit with a light smoky note, closing on spice and more tropical fruit. It is soft and fruit-forward rather than deep, an easygoing pour that leans on its brandy-cask fruitiness for interest. The gentle strength and dessert-leaning sweetness make it as suited to pairing with a dry dessert, or even cooking into crepes, as it is to a relaxed neat glass, a friendly and approachable everyday Panama rum.
