Description
Kumeu River is a family winery run by the Brajkovich family, and Mate's Vineyard is its flagship single-vineyard Chardonnay, named after Mate Brajkovich. The fruit is hand harvested and the whole bunches are pressed straight away, so the juice keeps its freshness before fermentation. Fermentation runs in barrel with the vineyard's own wild yeasts, and the wine then completes full malolactic fermentation, which converts sharper malic acid into softer lactic acid and gives the creamy, savoury texture. Around eleven months of barrel ageing on the lees adds body and a fine toasted character through slow oxygen exchange with the oak. In the glass it is pale gold, with grapefruit, white peach and struck-match reduction on the nose. The palate is broad but tightly wound, with citrus and stone fruit, a nutty, leesy weight and a long saline finish that keeps it fresh. Serve at around 12 degrees in a large white-wine glass.

Additional information
Serve with roast chicken and buttery mashed potato, or grilled cod and monkfish where the barrel weight matches the flesh. The nutty, leesy character also works with aged gouda and comte. A creamy mushroom risotto is another reliable match.
