Kumeu River planted these Pinot Noir vines in Hawke’s Bay on clay over sandstone, the same soils behind its Chardonnay. Aged 11 months in barrel, Hunting Hill is medium-bodied and elegant, with red cherry, raspberry and a savoury, earthy edge.
Description
Kumeu River is best known for Chardonnay, and in 1994 the family planted Pinot Noir at Hunting Hill in Hawke's Bay to make a red of equal quality. The clay soils over a sandstone base that suit their whites also work for Pinot Noir, retaining moisture and giving structure, while vigorous rootstocks were chosen to limit yields and concentrate the fruit. Burgundian clones were planted for finesse rather than weight. The cool maritime climate of Hawke's Bay preserves the bright acidity and delicate aromatics that define Pinot Noir, and the relatively low 12 percent alcohol reflects measured ripeness. The wine is aged 11 months in barrel, a restrained regime that adds a light frame of oak spice and softens the tannins through gentle oxygen exchange without masking the fruit. The colour is bright, medium ruby. The nose offers red cherry, raspberry, rose and a savoury, earthy undertone. The palate is medium-bodied and elegant, with fine tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees in a large glass. It is a natural partner for duck and roast chicken.
