Description
Yiannis Tselepos is one of the most respected producers in Greece, and this red comes from Nemea in the Peloponnese, made from Agiorgitiko, the region's signature red grape. Nemea's best vineyards sit high on a semi mountainous plateau, and that altitude brings cool nights and a wide day to night temperature range, which ripen Agiorgitiko fully while holding on to acidity and colour. The grape naturally gives soft tannin and generous, deep red fruit. The wine is aged eight months in oak barrels, a restrained regime where malolactic fermentation and slow oxygen exchange through the wood round the tannins and add a light spice without dominating the fruit. The colour is deep ruby. The nose shows ripe red berries, plum and cherry over dried herbs, cracked pepper and a light oak spice. The palate is medium to full bodied and smooth, with fresh acidity, supple tannin and a savoury, gently spiced finish. Serve it at 16 to 17 degrees in a medium glass. It is a fine match for lamb, red meat and hard cheeses.
