An oddity from Guatemala that smells and drinks more like a herbal liqueur than a molasses rum, all eucalyptus, fresh mint and floral lift over a whisper of milk chocolate, dry and unsweetened at 40%.
Description
Kong Ron is a Guatemalan column still rum that sets out to be a conversation piece rather than a classic sipper. Distilled from molasses and bottled at 40% by Kong Spirit under gorilla themed packaging tied to a conservation cause, it lands far closer to a herbal, spiced spirit than to the soft vanilla and caramel most Spanish style ron delivers. The aroma leads with eucalyptus, a fresh minty lift and a floral edge, with only a faint cocoa note hinting at the molasses base underneath.
The palate stays on that same green, herbal track, eucalyptus and fresh leafy notes running into a vegetal, dry finish with very little sweetness to soften it. Built on a light, clean column still spirit, this is a bottle for drinkers who reach for amaro or botanical gin and want something genuinely different, rather than anyone after a traditional aged rum profile. Mint and menthol dominate, so it works best as a curiosity poured neat and discussed.
