Koehler Ruprecht makes this dry Riesling Kabinett from Kallstadt in the Pfalz, aged in large old oak casks. Organically farmed, it is a voluminous, mineral white with ripe pear, honey and lemon over white flowers and a cool minty lift.
Description
Koehler Ruprecht works from a manor house in Kallstadt, in the centre of the Pfalz, with around ten hectares of vineyards and a reputation for Rieslings that are full-bodied, powerful and mineral. This dry Kabinett is a single-variety Riesling matured in the traditional way in large old oak casks, which allow a slow, gentle exchange of air without adding any obvious oak flavour, building texture and breadth while the fruit stays clear. The Pfalz is one of Germany's warmest and driest wine regions, sheltered by the Haardt hills, so the grapes ripen more fully here than further north, giving a Riesling with real volume balanced by the grape's firm natural acidity. Farming is organic. It pours pale gold, with a nose of ripe pear, honey and lemon lifted by white flowers and a cool minty note. The palate is dry, broad and mineral, the ripe fruit set against a taut line of acidity that carries a long, stony finish. Serve well chilled, around 10 to 11 degrees, in a white wine glass. It suits pork, roast chicken, richer fish and mildly spiced dishes.
