Description
The 12 Years Old is the core Knockando, the Speyside distillery founded in 1898 that has long been the heart of the J&B blend. Knockando takes the unusual step of bottling by vintage, releasing each year's spirit when judged ready rather than to a fixed age, a matured not aged philosophy.
Designed by the famed architect Charles Doig and now owned by Diageo, Knockando makes a light, fine Speyside spirit. Matured in ex-Bourbon casks, mostly ex-Maker's Mark and Jack Daniel's wood, the oak frames the malt cleanly.
Bottled at 43%. Vanillin from the ex-Bourbon reads as vanilla, oak lactones as coconut, maltol as toffee. The recorded notes run to fresh fruit, new wood, vanilla, chocolate, dried fruit and a hay-like edge. The soft, fruity heart of the range.
