Kistler makes this Pinot Noir in the cool Russian River Valley of Sonoma, blending two Burgundian clones from low-yielding, small-berried vines. Ten months in oak give a silky red with red cherry, raspberry and a savoury, earthy depth.
Description
Kistler sits in the Russian River Valley AVA of Sonoma County, a cool Californian region defined by coastal fog that rolls in off the Pacific and slows ripening. This Pinot Noir blends two clones, both from a Grand Cru vineyard in Burgundy, chosen for their very low yields, small berries, high concentration and naturally bright acidity. Those small berries raise the ratio of skin to juice, giving more colour, tannin and flavour, while the fog and cool nights extend the growing season and hold the wine's acidity and red fruit. The valley's sandy loam and gravel soils drain freely and keep yields modest, concentrating the fruit further. Ten months in barrel softens the tannins through gentle oxygen exchange and adds a fine vanilla and spice frame without overwhelming the fruit. The wine pours a bright ruby, with a nose of red cherry, raspberry and a floral lift, and a palate that is silky and concentrated, with a savoury, earthy depth and fresh acidity running into a long finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees. It suits roast duck, chicken and mushroom dishes.
