Description
Hazelwood 105 was among the first single malts ever released from Kininvie, the hidden William Grant & Sons distillery built in 1990 at Dufftown. Bottled in 2006 at fifteen years old for the Asian market, it took the Hazelwood name used for the distillery's rare single malts, after the home of Janet Sheed Roberts. Kininvie was built to supply malt for blends, so any single malt is scarce.
The distillery sits on the Balvenie site, its wash piped some 200 metres from Balvenie, and makes a light, floral Speyside spirit. Matured in Oloroso sherry, the wood deepens this rare malt.
At its natural cask strength of 52.5%, undiluted. The Oloroso gives dried fruit, melanoidins reading as fig and raisin. The recorded notes run to chocolate, dried fruit, an oily texture, old wood, a sherried character and tobacco. One of the earliest single malts from a near-secret distillery.
