Description
Kiedrich Grafenberg Riesling Trocken GG is a dry Grosses Gewachs from Weingut Robert Weil in the Rheingau, one of Germany's benchmark estates. Grosses Gewachs is the VDP's highest tier, equivalent to a grand cru, and Grafenberg is a steep, historic single vineyard. The vines grow on stony slopes of weathered slate and phyllite, warm, free draining soils that store daytime heat and reflect it back to the fruit, while the site's steep exposure and the cooling influence of the nearby Rhine give the wide day to night temperature swing that Riesling needs to hold its acidity. Made in the trocken, or dry, style, the wine is fully fermented so the fruit and minerality lead rather than any sweetness, with barrel and lees ageing adding a subtle texture without covering the site character. Expect a pale colour, a nose of lemon, white peach and white flowers with an apricot lift, and a taut, dry palate driven by high acidity and a slatey, saline finish of real length. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees in a white glass.
