Karukera Millésime 1999

Karukera, produced at Guadeloupe's Esperance distillery, bottles this 1999 millesime from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice under the island's IGP. It is an older agricole that has grown well beyond the bright simplicity of a young blanc into something deeper and more savoury.

Distilled on column and aged in the tropics, it noses floral and lightly funky with chocolate and roasted notes over a fresh lift, while the finish turns dry and gently bitter with cacao and wood. The character is exotic and layered, with alcohol on the nose giving way to roasted cocoa and spice on the palate, the kind of evolution long tropical ageing brings to good cane juice. The roasted, faintly bitter chocolate edge is its signature. A rewarding, contemplative agricole for drinkers who enjoy older Guadeloupe rum with a dry, cocoa-driven personality rather than obvious fruit or sweetness.
