A four-year Guadeloupe agricole from Karukera, fresh cane juice in ex-bourbon, woody and floral with anise and currants giving way to roasted fruit, finishing on caramel, oily texture and mango, well-balanced and dry at 46.7 percent.
Description
Karukera, relaunched in 2002 and known for single-cane bottlings, makes this L'Empyrium from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice in Guadeloupe, distilled on a column and aged four years in ex-bourbon. Guadeloupe falls under IGP rather than the Martinique AOC, but Karukera works squarely in the agricole tradition, and tropical ageing means four years here carries real wood influence.
The nose is woody and floral with anise and currants, the palate turns to roasted, woody fruit with more anise, and the finish brings caramel, an oily texture and a lick of mango. The bourbon barrel and the grassy cane core are well integrated, the wood and spice balanced against the fruit. Bottled unsweetened at 46.7 percent, it sits drier and more spice-forward than a sweet molasses rum, a composed aged agricole for neat sipping or a stirred drink that lets the oak and cane settle together.
