An older Guadeloupe agricole from Karukera at an easy 45%, dry and spicy with oak, warm baking spice, cacao, nuts, citrus and a little red fruit, balanced and long without ever turning heavy, a relaxed after-dinner sipper.
Description
Karukera Cuvee Christophe Colomb 1493 Hors d'Age is an aged cane-juice rum from the Karukera label, relaunched in 2002 and made at the Esperance distillery in Guadeloupe. Bottled at 45%, it sits in the older Hors d'Age tier, where extended tropical maturation does much of the heavy lifting.
Distilled from fresh-pressed cane juice on a column still and aged in oak, it shows a flowery, subtly nutty nose that opens slowly, leading into warm spice, cocoa and chocolate, citrus and a touch of red fruit. The style is dry and spice-forward rather than sweet, in keeping with good aged agricole, and the finish is long and satisfying with woody, mild edges. It is a balanced, contemplative pour best enjoyed neat after a meal.
