Description
Karuizawa single malt distillery, situated below the active Mt. Asama volcano in Nagano Prefecture, closed in 2000 after operating under Mercian since the 1950s. This release, cask #6890, was distilled in 1975 and bottled in 2016 at 41 Years Old for the Taiwan market, one of the longest-aged single cask expressions from the distillery's surviving stock.
Matured in an Oloroso sherry cask, the liquid sits squarely in the Karuizawa mould: intense dried fruit, dark chocolate, walnut and cracked leather, the sherry influence deepened by four decades in wood. Bottled at 56.9% cask strength, it was released directly by the distillery's custodians and demonstrates how long ageing in quality Oloroso wood adds refinement without sacrificing density.
