Description
Karuizawa single malt distillery in Nagano Prefecture closed in 2000 after producing spirit since 1956, and the single casks drawn from its Oloroso sherry programme have defined the distillery's global reputation. Cask #6256, distilled in 1981 and bottled in 2010 at 29 Years Old, was drawn from a first-fill Oloroso sherry cask and released at a dedicated event market.
First-fill Oloroso sherry casks deliver the highest extraction of dried fruit, dark chocolate, walnut and tannin, and at 29 years the wood influence is substantial without the extended ageing that can push toward over-oakedness. At 60.5% cask strength, bottled directly by the distillery's custodians for a single event, the release represents the first-fill end of Karuizawa's cask spectrum: intense, dense and fully expressive of the house's signature dark character.
