Description
Karuizawa single malt distillery in Nagano Prefecture closed in 2000 and was demolished in 2016, making every remaining cask a finite survivor of a site that defined a generation of Japanese whisky collecting. Cask #4139, distilled in 1977, was held in an Oloroso sherry butt until 2017, reaching a notable 40 years of age before bottling for the German market.
Four decades in Oloroso wood delivers the full Karuizawa portrait: dense dried fruit, bitter chocolate, worn leather and old spice, the sherry influence fully absorbed and integrated over a maturation period longer than most active Japanese distilleries have existed. Bottled at 64.9% cask strength by the distillery's custodians, it is one of the oldest single cask releases the Nagano site has produced.
